O2 Likely To Enter Fixed Broadband Market Posted on: 15/05/2006 In a new move, O2 has indicated in newspaper reports that it is likely to enter the fixed broadband market in the UK. The logic is to pipe TV over broadband to customer homes. Telefonica, O2’s new parent company is already one of the largest providers of TV over Internet with 250k users. Pressure on O2 has grown since cable group NTL's £962m takeover of Virgin Mobile. Vodafone itself has also suggested it has fixed-line aspirations. Options open to O2 include the acquisition of a fixed-line broadband service provider in the UK, lease network capacity from an existing provider, or build its own network. O2’s customer base rose to 32.8m by the end o fthe 1Q, with the UK customer base growing by 359,000 to 16.3m.News story posted by: BroadGroup
